It's preposterous to think that, in the span of a fortnight, the best vampire movie released in the past year will quietly have slipped in and out of theatres, will the worst will reign atop the box office for several weeks. But all films are not created equal, and the Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In (see my four star review here) just doesn't have the marketing budget to match up against the hype machine that is Twilight. So far, according to industry tracker Box Office Mojo, Let The Right One In -- the beautiful, disturbing tale of a lonely boy who befriends a vampire -- has earned about $430,000 in North America while Twilight -- which opened last night with a series of midnight screenings -- has already sold out over 2,000 showings this weekend, and will have probably pulled in about $60 million by the time the box office results roll in late on Sunday. To be fair, though, Twilight's probably not the worst vampire movie ever made. Here are ten more movies that give vampires a bad name. Getting bit by a bloodsucker is preferable to watching these flicks. In no particular order: 1. Underworld and Underworld: Evolution -- This is like Twilight for teenage boys. You have a vampish Kate Beckinsale -- wearing that Matrix-like skin-tight body suit -- dispatching werewolves and other creatures. It's not so much that these are bad movies -- well, they are -- it's that they are the kind of movies that have helped turn vampires from scary, miserable, creatures of the night into S&M enthusiasts who sit around in their mansions all day long. 2. Blade: Trinity -- The Blade franchise had so much potential. The first one is solid, if unspectacular; Guillermo Del Toro's sequel was pur eye candy -- not to mention it introduced an original, new type of vampire into the mythology. And then? Parker Posey. Ryan Reynolds. The wrestler, Triple H. Let's just forget this whole thing happened. 3. Dracula 2000 -- The cast isn't bad -- Gerard Butler, Christopher Plummer, Omar Epp |
